Thijs Hagendijk MSc

As a PhD candidate Thijs Hagendijk is part of the ERC funded project ‘ARTECHNE: Technique in the Arts, 1500-1950: Concepts, Practices, Expertise’. Aim of his subproject is to elucidate the interaction between textual and material practices in the transmission of artisanal techniques in early modern Europe. Special attention will be given to techniques and skills that were employed in the production of glass, pigments and metals.

In 2015, he graduated (cum laude) from the research master History and Philosophy of Science at Utrecht University. For his thesis, he studied the discovery of osmosis in the early nineteenth century and elucidated how osmosis eventually evolved into a phenomenon that was widely accepted by the nineteenth-century scientific community.
