How to write about the art of making: recipes, secrets and tinctoria technologies

How to write about the art of making: recipes, secrets and tinctoria technologies

Guest lecture & hands-on Workshop, organised by Dr. Jenny Boulboullé for Research Master students Art History Utrecht University, seminar Art & Knowledge by Dr. Marlise Rijks and Prof. Sven Dupré

In this workshop we make an excellent red ink (Rosette excellente) following a recipe from an early seventeenth-century manuscript, Sloane MS 2052, better known among technical art historians as the Mayerne Manuscript. We will make our own Tinctoria Tester and quill to test our self-made red ink with different additives and observe changes in color and handling properties. You can see a handout with the recipe here: HANDOUT Workshop ART & KNOWLEDGE. Follow us on twitter to see the results.

We thank our collaborators at the RCE in particular Art Gaibor Proaño, for their advise and for making this workshop possible and their advise and Jill Kirby who helped with preparation of course materials of an earlier edition of this workshop.
